What Nokbox is
Nokbox stands for "next of kin box." It is a paper filing system made by The Nokbox of Littleton, Colorado, founded in 2021 by Maria Fraietta after she spent a year settling her father's estate. You work through 72 checksheets, one topic at a time, and file each completed sheet with its documents in one of 67 labeled hanging folders. The front of each checksheet is for you; the back tells your next of kin what to do with that folder.
Four tiers were on sale on September 17, 2026: Lite, $69 (checksheets, pouch, key bag and tags, no folders or box); Base Kit, $139 (adds the folders, no box); Original, $129 on sale, regular $159 (the system in a white handled box); Fireproof, $139 on sale, regular $179 (fire-resistant box). Nokbox also sells on Amazon.
What Nokbox does well is not in dispute. The folders make the job concrete, the checksheets tell you what to gather, the key bag solves a problem most people have not thought about, and the review base is large: 11,584 reviews at 4.6 stars on its own reviews page and 1,392 at 4.6 on the Base Kit page (September 17, 2026). A Bogleheads member wrote of her mother: "my mom wanted something that led her by the hand through the process, and it definitely lived up to that" (Pyrite, bogleheads.org, August 16, 2025).
Two things to know before buying. The return window is short: "reach out to us within a 7-day window, send back the product within another 7 days," with outbound shipping deducted from refunds (return policy page, September 17, 2026). And Nokbox's Better Business Bureau profile carried a D rating with 8 reviews averaging 1.63 stars on September 17, 2026, a small sample next to thousands of positive reviews on Nokbox's own site, so read it as individual experiences rather than a verdict.
What buyers say they wish it did
The most consistent request, on Nokbox's own product pages and on forums, is a digital copy. Quotes are verbatim:
- "it would help to have a digital 'NOKBOX' folder on my computer with all the information" (John C., thenokbox.com/products/nokbox-naked, October 23, 2023).
- "the lack of an equivalent electronic or on-line version is disappointing" and "the print on my pages are too light for my vision-impaired NOK" (Lorie Leilani S., same page, November 24, 2023).
- "Really wish there was an easy way to keep it up to date. I can write everything in pencil and then erase time and again as things change. I'd rather have an electronic copy of each page so I could print a fresh one when I need to update something." (TucsonT, bogleheads.org, August 30, 2025).
The second theme is setup effort: "Setup was a little daunting because of all the folders needed and labels to apply." (Robert E., thenokbox.com/pages/customer-reviews-1, June 10, 2026); "This is a lot of work getting all the details but it is extremely comprehensive." (Norman B., same page, July 31, 2026). The third is returns: "There is a terribly quick (7 day) return policy." (Julie L, bbb.org, January 4, 2026). So the things to look for in an alternative are a digital copy you can reprint, a lighter setup, larger print and a longer return window.
Alternatives by type

Prices seen September 17, 2026, when the variants showed as sold out or unavailable, so check stock.
Savor Family Emergency Binder. A fabric folio with 33 illustrated labels, ten envelopes and a contents page, for keeping documents rather than answering prompts; the listing mentions no worksheets or digital files. $65.49 on September 17, 2026, some colors backordered to November 2026.
Books and workbooks
I'm Dead, Now What? and Peace of Mind Planner (Peter Pauper Press). The same 96-page tabbed hardcover interior under a joking cover and a plain one. $16.99 at Sassy Extras with 15,059 Amazon ratings at 4.6 stars; the plain edition $17.95 at Franklin Planner with 9,717 ratings at 4.6 (September 17, 2026). Contents date from 2014 and 2015. Space is the common complaint: "It's poorly laid out with nowhere near enough space for the required information to be entered." (saraclara, mumsnet.com, July 23, 2026).
Lamorial End of Life Planner. An 83-page A4 journal with nine sections, including phone access codes, subscriptions and yearly update pages. Clever Fox End of Life Planner. A hardcover with 16 sections: $19.99 in A5, $25.99 in 8.5 by 11 inch (cleverfoxplanner.com, September 17, 2026). The large size had 1,949 Amazon ratings at 4.6 stars that day. 60-day money-back guarantee.
Get It Together (Nolo). A 440-page workbook by Melanie Cullen and Shae Irving with fill-in pages, guidance chapters from a legal publisher and downloadable forms. Prisidio and the AARP Digital Vault. A cloud vault for documents, contacts and valuables: $16 a month or $150 a year on the App Store, rated 4.8 from 38 ratings (September 17, 2026). The same app powers the AARP Digital Vault, $20 a year with an AARP membership. Storage rather than guidance.

How to choose
You want paper only, with someone holding your hand. Nokbox and CLEAR Kit are the two systems built for this. Nokbox is cheaper and better known; CLEAR Kit costs more, adds fillable PDFs so you can reprint one page, and allows 30 days for returns. If you already own folders, the $69 Nokbox Lite or the $16.99 Peter Pauper planner covers the prompts.
You want something digital that you can update. A fillable file beats handwriting the moment your bank changes. Lamorial's $14.99 digital edition, Nolo's forms, the free Big Book of Everything spreadsheet and the Vanguard PDF all work this way. Everplans and Trustworthy update easily but cost every year, and your information lives on their servers. Omliva sits between: you edit online, then regenerate a fresh printed and digital guide.
You are helping a parent. Large print and short sessions matter most. Nokbox reviewers mention print that is hard for older eyes, and books give one line per account. Look for a large-type edition, a question-by-question flow you can do together over a few evenings, and an executor section written for you, the adult child.
You want it done for you. No product here fills itself in. The closest are the ones that reduce the typing: CLEAR Kit's sequenced worksheets, Nolo's guidance, and Omliva's guided questions that generate the finished guide. Professional organizers and daily money managers also build binders for a fee.
Frequently asked questions
Is Nokbox worth it?
For someone who wants a physical, guided system and will finish it, the review base says yes: 11,584 reviews at 4.6 stars on Nokbox's site on September 17, 2026. The price ($129 to $139 boxed, on sale that day) buys structure rather than anything you could not assemble yourself, which is the point of the criticism on BBB. Decide based on whether structure is what you are missing.
Does Nokbox have a digital version?
The kits are paper. Reviewers on Nokbox's own site ask for a digital copy, and one Bogleheads member notes that "Nokbox users recommend to scan the checklists" once filled in (LHMatt, bogleheads.org, September 2, 2025). If you want to type instead of write, choose a product that starts digital: CLEAR Kit's fillable PDFs, Lamorial's digital edition or Omliva.
Nokbox or CLEAR Kit?
Nokbox is the lower-cost option ($129 to $139 boxed, on sale September 17, 2026) with a seven-day return window and paper checksheets. CLEAR Kit ($199 to $449) adds a personalized binder, a fire and water resistant case, fillable PDFs for reprinting single pages and a 30-day return window. Both are paper systems you fill in yourself.
Can I return a Nokbox?
Yes, within a short window. Nokbox's policy on September 17, 2026: contact them within 7 days of delivery, ship it back within another 7 days, undamaged and resellable. Outbound shipping is deducted, and up to $40 per item can be deducted if document packets have been opened.
How is Omliva different from Nokbox?
Nokbox gives you blank checksheets and folders to fill by hand. Omliva asks you questions online and generates the finished guide, in large type, printed and digital, with an executor playbook, and lets you update and regenerate it later. Omliva is in preview with no public price yet, so this is a description of the approach, not a verdict on value.
Do any of these replace a will or power of attorney?
No. Every product here, including Omliva, organizes information for the people who will act for you. Wills, trusts, powers of attorney and health care directives are legal documents that depend on your state; talk to an attorney or a reputable document service for those.
